As the night progressed to
6:00 AM, the geometry completely inverted. The Milky Way flattened out and set.
It disappeared from view.
Simultaneously, the four
stars rotated exactly 90 degrees around the northern node. The horizontal line
they held at dusk flipped into a perfectly vertical plum line at dawn. This
allowed the priests to drop their "merket" lines and map the true
geographic North-South axis onto the temple floor.
The Position of the Big
Dipper
The position of the Big
Dipper (Meshetyu) can be precisely determined. It swings a large
counter-clockwise circle around the NCP (the node), acting as a massive comic
clock face over a 24-hour cycle.
1. At 7:00 PM (Dusk / The Vertical Milky Way
Window
When the Milky Way reached
its peak vertical orientation in the south, the Big Dipper was positioned
extremely low, scraping the Northern Horizon in its lowest culmination (its
lowest point in the sky).
Orientation: The constellation was oriented horizontally.
It looked like a wagon resting flat on the ground.
Spatial Position: The bowl of the dipper was pointing to the
North-Northwest (NNW), while its curved handle trailed backward toward the
(NW).
The Pointer Stars: The two end stars of the bowl (Dubhe and
Merak) pointed straight upward from the horizon aiming directly at the unmarked
NCP and the horizontal alignment of Kochab and Thuban.
2. At 6:00 AM (Dawn / The 4-Stars Vertical Line
Window
Exactly eleven hours later,
as dawn began to break and the four stars (Kochab, Pherkad, Thuban and Kappa
Draconis) locked into the perfect vertical alignment, the Big Dipper had
rotated nearly 165 degrees up the eastern side of the sky.
Orientaion: The constellation was now standing completely
vertical, balancing on its handle.
Spatial Position: It hung
high in the North-Northeast (NNE) sky.
The Pointer Stars: The bowl was now at the very top of the
constellation, pointing due West directly across the vertical meridian line
toward the 4-star alignment.
The Symmetrical Dance: At 7:00 Pm, when the body of the goddess Nut
(The Milky Way) stood vertical in the south, the Big Dipper was suppressed,
lying flat and low on the northern horizon.
The Ritual Pivot: By 8:30 PM, as the Milky Way vanished, the
Big Dipper stood completely upright in the NNE sky. Its vertical shape mirrored
the geometric form of an Egyptian adze--the tool used in the sacred
"Opening of the Mouth" funerary ritual to grant eternal life to the
decease Pharaoh.
